Sincerely, The Health Movement Team Many of you may have the desire to be healthy, you have the desire to eat well and exercise but there just doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day. Whether you’re working a 60 hour week or chasing 2 kids around the house all day, there isn’t time for much else. And even on the rare occasion that you do find a little time for yourself, the last thing you want to do is run to the gym or cook a healthy meal. After all, those few free hours are your deserved time to relax. You are busy! I get it, but I want to propose an idea for you to chew on for a bit. A successful workout doesn’t always mean you have to spend an hour at the gym. A healthy diet doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself to fruits and vegetables only. I’m telling you that even a 10 minute workout can have an impact. Or replacing one snack a day with a healthy one. You want to do better but you can’t make the huge commitment to change your entire life upside down, I don’t expect you to. I want you to take a baby step, just this week. Find one thing that you’ve been struggling with and make a small goal to help you improve upon that. You have New Year’s Resolutions that you’ve made, and Health Movement wants to help you achieve those! Don’t feel overwhelmed, just use 10 minutes of your day to work towards a goal. This week your challenge is to make one single goal to improve your health. By doing this baby step you are choosing to take control of your own life and make a real change that will truly impact your health. Remember that no pill can give you the the healthy life you want, only you can do that! This is how you #FightTheFad. Go to our website Healthmovement.com to start tracking your baby steps for free! As a health professional I have mixed emotions this time of year. On one hand it’s great to see people recommit themselves to healthier living. But on the other hand it’s incredibly sad to see people fall for fads, diets, pills, drinks, juices, cleanses, and quick fixes time and time again. They pour their money into these products and false promises, but ultimately end up back where they started, and more often than not even worse. My plea for the coming year is simple, don’t do it! Fight the fads, save your money, and instead establish healthy habits that will benefit you long-term. Too many of us are waiting for a quick fix solution that will allow us to continue to live our current unhealthy lifestyle, yet reap the benefits of a healthy life. Do you see the problem with this? It will never happen. So what does work? Establishing and living a healthy lifestyle. Lasting energy and health doesn’t come from a bottle; it comes from consistent healthy living. It’s not sexy to say so, and this won’t make the front-page news, but it’s the truth. And the truth is what the public needs. They need to hear that a lifetime (or five or ten years) of neglecting their body, can’t magically be reversed in a week or month. The truth is, it’s going to be hard. You’ll experience obstacles and setbacks along the way. But don’t be discouraged by this. No one achieves success without a few, and often times many stumbles. Don’t give up, dust yourself off and keep going. If you want to achieve long-term success you’re going to have to be consistent with your health goals, not for a week or month or even 90 days, but year after year. The good news is we know what to do, and we know it’s achievable. Over the past 50 years the best scientific research has identified what habits lead to the healthiest lives. In fact we now know that by simply changing your lifestyle to include healthy habits, you can reduce your risk of obesity, premature death and all chronic disease by 80%. No that’s not a typo…read it again, 80%! Let me be absolutely clear on this, you DO NOT need to purchase anything from anyone (us included) to achieve a healthy weight and lifestyle, and reduce your risk of all chronic disease by 80%. There are many free resources out there, including our website www.HealthMovement.com, where we provide you with all the knowledge, tools and support you need to be successful. Having said that, if you want some assistance in establishing these healthy habits, there are reasonable options you can pay for to help you, such as our 30-Day Lifestyle Program. But for the love of Pete, please don’t waste your money on the aforementioned fads, diets, pills, drinks, juices, cleanses and quick fixes. They do more harm than good and only pad the pockets of disingenuous companies. For lasting health, learn and apply the health principles of proper sleep, exercise, nutrition and happiness (which include proper mental, emotional and social health). There are no short cuts. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. This year, let’s all do something different. Let’s rise above and reject all fads, diets, pills, drinks, juices, cleanses and quick fixes. They’ve never worked to establish lasting health, and they never will. You can take that to the bank! This year, save your money and your health. Choose to get healthy once and for all by focusing on establishing a healthy lifestyle. Don’t just make a resolution, make a lifestyle resolution! Speaking of being home, there is food galore here! Cookies, candies, chips, soda, pizza, all the junk that can be imagined! I'll be honest, keeping up with my holiday goals has been more challenging than I thought, definitely when it comes to eating.
Guys, I hate this. I hate eating just to eat but every time the holidays hit, this is what I do! Why?? I always feel sick and it’s not worth it. So for today's topic I want to talk about food since it's everywhere around me right now! And I'm sure it's around you too. A couple weeks ago I talked about making holiday goals and one of those goals was to get all of my servings in of fruits and vegetables before I start pigging out on the junk. Up until a few days ago I was doing really good! I really liked doing it because it helped me get full on the healthy and made less room for the unhealthy. I still ate my sweets but I didn't over consume to the point where I felt sick. It may sound cliche but eating healthy does help. If you eat the healthy first, I promise your body will love you for it and you’ll feel more in control over what you eat. So my goal that I'm re-challenging myself and for all of you to do this week is to eat your 5 servings of fruits and veggies before munching down on the goodies. Let me clarify, no one is to completely cut out the goodies, just for this week I want us all to eat our 5 servings of healthy before pigging out on the junk. Let's see if it helps you the way it helps me! Find your healthy balance! Hello! My name is Nick Hatch, I am a recent graduate from the University of Utah where I earned my degree in Exercise and Sport Science with an emphasis as a Health and Wellness Specialist. Before I begin, I want to say that I am no professional blogger, and don’t have a social media presence. However, I am very grateful for this opportunity to introduce myself, and to share my passion and excitement for Health Movement. Growing up I had the opportunity to play all sports but baseball, basketball and football were my main three. I loved it. I loved being active. I loved to exercise and I wasn’t half bad either. Of all the sports I played, football was my #1. I love the atmosphere, the game and all the hard work that goes into being successful. I know this is where I developed a competitive drive to be and do my very best, and like most kids, I aspired to play in the NFL. As a walk-on at the University of Utah I had the opportunity to train, practice and play at the collegiate level. It was an opportunity of a lifetime! Unfortunately, I sustained an injury that potentially could impact my life later down the road. It was a hard decision for me, but after meeting with my coaches I decided to hang up my cleats. But as you can imagine, I had some D-line playing weight to lose. I wanted to maintain good health so I could enjoy the highest quality of life possible. I, like many of you, was bombarded with information on how to best lose weight, from fad diets, pills, and weight loss plans a plenty. “Don’t eat carbs!!” “Go on a cleanse!” “Starve and have one cheat day!” However, I knew I wanted to lose weight and keep it off, and I knew that wasn’t going to come from any of these methods, it was going to come from healthy living. 80% of the chronic diseases that our country suffers from can be prevented through living a healthy lifestyle. I have made significant progress with my weight and health. In fact I’m down 40 pounds. I’ve done it by making simple changes to the way I live, not by following a “fad diet.” My goal is to enjoy life to the fullest, and I know I need my health to do that. We each have our own reasons to be healthy. Discover yours! Check out Healthmovement.com, JOIN THE MOVEMENT, challenge your friends and enjoy the highest quality of life your health has to offer. Alright guys lets talk about fitness. I feel like exercising is like the diet thing, everyone wants it to be easy and painless, but I’ll be honest with you, it’s not. A lot of people hate it, and I completely understand why because I used to be one of them. I hated having to find the time in my day to get myself to the gym. It was such an ordeal to change, stretch, exercise, stretch, change, etc. I hated feeling like I had to look cute at the gym (girls will understand this one!) I hated feeling dumb trying to figure out how to use weight machines. The list goes on. I really didn’t like it. Yet, I would force myself to go because I knew it was good for me. I would get into a cycle where I’d either be really good at going everyday, or I’d be really really bad. Sometimes I’d branch out, trying exercise classes like cycling and water aerobics, all were much more fun than the gym. But I was still hung up on the time commitment. When I’m gone all day for school and work I just want to go home at the end of the day. It doesn't help that the sun goes down at 5pm. I want to go home and get in my pjs! So that has been my life. I was telling my husband how I’ve been really bad about making it to the gym this semester with my busy schedule. I just couldn’t find the time, or the desire to make time. He was in the exact same situation. We brainstormed to figure out a better solution to our problem. And after doing our homework we decided we needed a home gym. And holy cow, it has been the best decision ever. I actually look forward to coming home and getting on my little exercise bike. I throw on my sweats, turn on my netflix and bike my heart out. I bike while my husband lifts, then we switch. All while enjoying an episode of our favorite show. It seriously has made such a huge difference. It’s a win-win for us, we spend time together, watch an episode on netflix and challenge each other to see who can bike the furthest distance. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not telling you to go and build a home gym. The point I’m trying to get across is that it’s important to find a way to exercise that works best for you. I hated going to the gym, so the solution for me was to bring it home. But not only did I bring it home, I had to find something that I enjoyed to do at home. I love to bike so getting a cheap fold up exercise bike for our tiny apartment was my fix. But like I said before, it took some time to figure out what worked for me and what got me excited to exercise. Maybe it’s a pilates or Zumba class with your girlfriends, or running with your spouse. Whatever it is, find a way to incorporate it into your routine. Find a way to get excited about it. I promise it will be worth it! And if you are wanting some guidance, like how much exercise you need each week or where to begin, we’ve got lots of information HERE on our website for you. That’s the end of my exercise spiel for today. Let me know what unique way you find to fit your exercise in! I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving and their Black Friday shopping, I know I did! Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, it’s officially that time of year. The holidays are here and with that, all of the delicious food that comes with it.
Everyone, and I mean everyone has a hard time being healthy during this time of year, there’s no way around that. We are surrounded by good food everywhere! I’m not going to lecture you on how to say no to every cookie you come in contact with, that would be cruel. I don’t want you to cut out sweets or any other food that tempts you this season. I say yes to the food! But unfortunately we don’t live in a perfect world where we can eat everything and anything in sight without experiencing some sort of consequence. Ergo, a plan of action is in order. I was talking to my mom earlier this week and she was telling me how the holidays are the worst time for her health, she works all year to lose weight and then come December she gains it all back. This can be really frustrating, especially since it comes only once a year so you don’t want to miss out on any goodies. However I, like my mom, hate feeling guilty and groggy all season long. Most of the time that 5th cookie isn't worth it and when I’m not exercising, my body is tired and sluggish. This got me thinking that this year I want to be better. No diets, nothing that will ruin the joys of the holiday season, but I want to create goals for myself so that I don’t have the “I ate too much” stomach ache all December long. I’m going to make 3 simple goals to keep me on track during this busy time of year. I challenge you to do the same! Whether it’s finding time to exercise for 30 minutes each day before chowing down, limiting yourself to trying just 1 of every cookie rather than 5, or simply maintaining your current weight through the holidays. You decide what’s best for you! I’m going to create my goals on the Health Movement website so I can see my progress throughout the month. You all can do this too by creating a free account by clicking HERE. I will be sharing my progress throughout the month and let you all know how it’s going. Let’s all be better this holiday season! Here are my holiday goals:
Hi, I’m Jamie, a new member of the team here at Health Movement. Let me start by saying I’m not a gym junkie or a granola nut. I don’t shop exclusively at Whole Foods and I’ve never ran a triathlon. I’m a person that tries to find simple ways to live healthier in my busy schedule. However, like many of you, I’ve found that this is annoyingly difficult. With so many pills, diets and exercise plans out there it’s hard to know where to start.
That’s where we come in. We want to make being healthy as simple as possible. Here, you can find tips and tricks to live healthier the real and long lasting way. No quick fixes, just simple solutions. But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy ourselves along the way! The other day I was asked why I chose the health field, of all the careers out there, why am I pursuing this? I turned it back on them and asked, ”What do you value in your life? What do you enjoy? Family, friends, career, travel?” Anything you can think of requires one thing. Your health. Why should you care about this movement? Why should you care about health? Simple. Because you value your life and everything in it. Because you want to enjoy your life and live it to the fullest. Because you don’t want to miss out on anything. Health is life! Without your health you can accomplish nothing else. I joined Health Movement so you and I can be better and do more. If you’re still reading this you may notice that we take health pretty dang seriously. What can I say? It’s our passion! We’re excited about our future and we hope you are too. We hope you find this blog to be helpful, inspiring, and motivating. So visit us often and stay awhile. On behalf of the team, we officially welcome you to our Health Movement. |
